Thattekad Bird Sanctuary Tourism Guide
Widely popular as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is an acknowledged Bird sanctuary named after famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali. This avifauna reservoir is exclusively rich and vibrant and provides an observation sight to watch the birdlife. This overspread sanctuary is a home to 500 species of birds and rare animals like Wayanad laughing thrush, rufous babbler, and white-bellied blue flycatcher.
One can also take a boat cruise through the backwater while traversing inside the semi green, deciduous forest. Near the sanctuary, The Bhoothnathkettu Dam is another most happening place among locals as an interesting picnic joint.
Situated on the northern bank of the Periyar River, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary or Thattekkad bird sanctuary could bring out an addictive and compelling activity of watching and spotting those avifauna species in their natural habitat. Surrounded by semi green dense vegetation and deciduous forest, this Sanctuary houses an ample number of rare and extinct fauna species like Crimson-Throated Barbet, Bee-eater, and Black winged Kite. Around 10 km from Thattekad, Bhoothathankettu Dam is an attractive and interesting picnic spot among the local living there. Thattekad may not offer you much for your taste buds as it offers your eyes. One cannot find much vibrancy and significance in the cuisines available here. There are some minor number of eating joints scattered here and there where one can try popular typical Keralan food and indulge themselves into the natural beauty.

It is advisable to not roam around this place alone at night and on foot as that will not be safe. Jeep safari and boat riding are available here which will take you to places inside this place.
